Also keep in mind, Sobi2 is in a Stable maintenance phase and all development efforts are now focused on SobiPro, so that's an even better reason that you don't see any updates to the current plugin.
But I will say that the Gallery Plugin is released under the GPL license and any updates you want to contribute back to the community will be considered I'm sure.
