About eleven years ago we discovered the Mambo CMS and decided to create our company website with it. Shortly after that the community decided to fork Mambo and create Joomla! We followed and joined the Joomla community.
We found that Joomla was an extraordinary piece of software and we were looking to use it even more. Let's be honest, using Joomla at that time and today, was simply fun. So we decided to create a local portal for our small village.
One of the crucial parts of such a website is a business directory. We searched but couldn’t find anything that exactly matched our needs but we found something that was close. As Joomla and its extensions are Open Source so we could fork this extension and modify it to our needs.
We were also fascinated with the Open Source philosophy so we decided to share our fork with the Joomla! community. So exactly 10 years ago we released the very first version of SOBI.
Well, not exactly. The very first version was called Joomla! Yellow Pages. But it didn’t take long before we were warned that “Yellow Pages” is a registered trademark. So we changed the name to SOBI (Sigsiu Online Business Index).

SOBI became a huge success. This was great but it also meant that we had a lot of requests for new features. This took a lot of our time so we dropped the idea of creating our local community website and instead started to invest our free time in the development of SOBI.
SOBI was followed later by Sobi2 and SobiPro and now ten years later with SobiPro you can build a business directory or a restaurant guide, a real estate management or a members and profiles directory, a documentation and FAQ area or a download management system, a simple weblink directory or news list and even a blog. You can do almost anything with SobiPro.
